Koh Tao is situated about 65km from Koh Samui and it couldn’t be more different still managing to keep its own identity. It’s easy to see why so many people passing through decide to stay a little bit longer and if you speak to any of the expat community living here, nobody had planned to stay. The island enjoys a long season and you can come here all year round with the best conditions usually around April to May especially if you want to see Whale Sharks.
There are three main towns on Koh Tao, with lots of small beaches, the largest beach Haad Sairee is on the Northwest side of the island and is the busiest of all the beaches, with a choice of restaurants, beach bars and parties it is very popular with the younger tourists.
Sairee Beach is where most of the nightlife is, with lots of resorts it’s generally more expensive and harder to get good rooms when the island is busy so it is a good idea to book rooms in advance. Coral Grand Divers one of our partner dive resorts is located on the North of Sairee Beach which is one of the quietest parts but still just a short walk from the action.
The famous Lotus bar is also a short stroll away, where in the evenings you can chill out and watch the sun go down and enjoy fire shows and music into the late hours of the night, but watch out if you are diving as late nights and hangovers are not recommended when you’ve got an early start in the morning.
Be warned San-song and Redbull Buckets are great fun at the time but can lead to embarrassing apologies and sore heads in the morning, also keep in mind not to drink and drive, make sure to leave the bike at home as most accidents on the island happen after the parties and it’s not worth it to ruin your holiday.
Mae Haad town was once the main area for restaurants, but since the popularity of Sairee took over, doesn’t get as busy a night, but this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go there. One of our favourite places to eat is Whitening Beach Bar which offers both Thai and Western cuisine and reasonable prices, also a great place for sipping a Mohito watching the sun go down.
Accommodation in Mae Haad isn’t as expensive a Sairee but there is less choice, prices range from 600 baht upwards a night. There are plenty of dive shops and our office is located in Mae Haad between the Lomprayah and Songserm Piers.
